Our Story

At Studio Tolsta, we create products that embody collaboration, heritage, and intentional design. At the root of everything we make lies an appreciation for timeless craftsmanship and thoughtful design. With meticulous attention to detail, our workshops ensure each piece is crafted with exceptional care, telling a story of integrity and artistry.

From Scotland to South India

Studio Tolsta was founded by Scottish designer Catriona Maciver in her ancestral village of Tolsta on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. What began as a one-person endeavor in a converted loom shed has since grown into a vibrant business now based in Tamil Nadu, South India.

Initially inspired by Harris Tweed—a handwoven fabric unique to the Outer Hebrides—Catriona began by making bags and soft furnishings. A design residency brought her to India in 2014, where she became captivated by traditional Indian crafts. Today, Studio Tolsta works closely with a collective of skilled artisans, tailors, and craft experts to create durable, thoughtfully crafted everyday goods.

Every piece is designed with care, produced in small batches, and reflects our dedication to quality and craftsmanship. Celebrating both Scottish and Indian heritage, our work brings together traditional crafts in contemporary designs that are made with integrity and designed to age beautifully.

Our Craft Collective

Our in-house production units are hubs of creativity, specializing in intricate craft techniques such as block printing, embroidery, and tailoring. We believe in showcasing the rich heritage of traditional crafts while re-imagining them—in our own way— for today’s world.

Beyond our in-house expertise, we also collaborate with a collective of talented weavers, natural dyers, and artisans from various regions of India and beyond.

Slow Design for a Lasting Impact

Guided by Slow Design principles, we ensure every product is created thoughtfully and with care. Ethical production, fair wages, and environmentally friendly practices are central to everything we do. Our goal is to offer products you can feel good about—pieces made with integrity, designed to bring warmth and beauty into your home for years to come.
